Fourteen sprinters have been confirmed in the final field for the 2016 Hong Kong Sprint (1200m) at Sha Tin Racecourse; highlighted by the inclusion of some of the world’s best short course race horses.

2015 champion Peniaphobia has returned to racing in competitive form this time and has been confirmed in the 2016 Hong Kong Sprint final field.

Running third behind Buffering in the Group 1 Al Quoz Sprint (1000m) in March, Peniaphobia failed to fire when thirteenth behind Chautauqua in the Group 1 Chairman’s Sprint Prize (1200m) on May 1st, but responded with a smart win in the Group 3 Sha Tin Vase (1200m).

Resuming this time for third in the Group 3 National Day Cup (1000m), the Dandy Man gelding has since finished midfield in each of the Group 2 Premier Bowl Handicap (1200m) and Group 2 Jockey Club Sprint (1200m).

Australia will have only one representative at 2016 International Race Day after Rebel Dane was confirmed in the 2016 Hong Kong Sprint.

A multiple Group 1 winner, Rebel Dane has been a strong and consistent performer for Gary Portelli throughout his entire racing career so far; posting eight wins and a further nine minors through thirty-six appearances.

Resuming this time for second in the Group 2 Missile Stakes (1200m) on August 6th, the California Dane entire ran third in the Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) and sixth in the Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1300m).

Appearing to have lost condition when he could only manage seventh in the Group 2 Premiere Stakes (1200m), Rebel Dane began the Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) as a $61 outsider, but led from start to finish to record undoubtedly a career-best win.

Having performed well in a Rosehill barrier trial on Tuesday morning, Portelli is thrilled with Rebel Dane’s condition and the seven-year-old will be partnered by Ben Melham in the 2016 Hong Kong Sprint.
