Purton Confident in 2014 Hong Kong Sprint Success for Aerovelocity

December 11th, 2014

While disappointing when failing to beat a single runner home in his most recent appearance on course, jockey Zac Purton is confident Aerovelocity has the class to take out Sunday’s Group 1 Hong Kong Sprint (1200m) at Sha Tin Racecourse.

Finishing outside the top three only a handful of times over his fourteen start career so far, Aerovelocity more than stamped his claims as a serious Hong Kong Sprint contender when charging home to win the Premier Bowl (1200m) first-up this time, but was unable to match the late pace of Peniaphobia when fourteenth in the Group 2 Jockey Club Sprint (1200m) on November 23rd.

Having partnered the Pins gelding in each of his last nine competitive appearances at the races, Purton is confident the six-year-old is yet to find his racing potential and is expecting a polished performance in the 2014 Hong Kong Sprint.

“I think that he is,” Purton told Racing Ahead of Aerovelocity’s chances of success in the Hong Kong Sprint.

“He had to take the next step this season and I think that he has done that.

“He went through the grades nicely last season and he rattled off five or six wins in a row and then he came back this season and obviously won at the start of the season.

“He was unlucky the other day, I went for a rails run and it closed on me, but if he had off got through then he would have been right in the finish.

“He is an exciting horse, but we still don’t know how good he is.

“I think he can take the required step and be very competitive in the race.”

Yet to contest an event at the highest level of racing, Aerovelocity began his racing career under the guidance of kiwi trainer Andrew Scott; transferring to Peter O’Sullivan’s care after just one competitive start in 2012.

Finishing third in a minor over 1200m first-up in late 2013, the gelding out of Exodus truly announced his arrival when claiming his next four-consecutive race starts.
