Buffering Misses Gallop in Lead Up to 2014 Hong Kong Sprint

Taking particularly well to his time in Hong Kong since arriving for his maiden international tilt early last week, trainer Robert Heathcote has revealed Buffering missed a track gallop on the Sha Tin course on Tuesday morning after suffering a foot abscess.

Returning to racing in typically competitive form this season, Buffering has been kept to a light work-load in the lead up to Sunday’s Group 1 Hong Kong Sprint (1200m); a proven formula used with the high-achieving veteran in seasons gone by.

Understandably worried when finding the Mossman gelding to be unable to put weight on his hoof on Tuesday morning, Heathcote told AAP he is confident a quick response from the farrier will mean the difference in Buffering taking his position in the 2014 Hong Kong Sprint this weekend.

“I was concerned when we arrived at the stables around 7.30 this morning and the horse could hardly put his foot down,” Heathcote said.

“But the farrier was there in no time and did a brilliant job.

I suspect he’d be fine to work tomorrow but we might play it safe and work him Thursday morning.

“We had planned to gallop him this morning on the turf but working him later in the week is not a problem. No drama, I think he’ll be fine.”

Undoubtedly finding career-best form when securing three impressive Group 1 victories over the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival, Buffering quickly built to the task upon returning to racing this year, but was unable to reach the same racing highs in finishing seventh in the Group 2 Challenge Stakes (1000m) and third in each of the Group 1 T.J. Smith Stakes (1200m), Group 1 BTC Cup (1200m) and Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m).

Charging home to secure a fourth victory at the highest level of Australian racing in the Group 1 Moir Stakes (1200m) first-up this time, Buffering was unlucky to run seventh in a fanning finish in the Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) on October 24th before placing a credible fourth behind leading sprinters Terravista, Chautauqua and Lankan Rupee in the Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m) on November 8th.
