Buffering Enjoying Time Ahead of 2014 Hong Kong Sprint

December 9th, 2014

Arriving alongside fellow Australian raider Criterion early last week, trainer Robert Heathcote has revealed veteran sprinter Buffering has settled into Hong Kong particularly well and is even more confident of a successful tilt in Sunday’s Group 1 Hong Kong Sprint (1200m) at Sha Tin Racecourse.

Securing four exceptional victories at the highest level of Australian racing through his 45 start career so far, Buffering finished a credible fourth behind the world’s leading sprinters Terravista, Chautauqua and Lankan Rupee in the Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m) last time out, priming the seven-year-old for his maiden International assault.

Arriving in Hong Kong himself on Thursday to oversee the Mossman gelding’s final preparations, Heathcote told AAP he could not be more pleased with the form and condition displayed in work and is excited by the his chances in the 2014 Hong Kong Sprint.

“I’m very, very happy,” Heathcote said.

“He took a couple of days to settle in and he’s nice and bright.

“We won’t be doing a lot of work with him. I have a fit racehorse. He’s had some good solid racing in the spring down in Melbourne.”

Claiming sixteen wins and a further 17 minor places over his 45 competitive starts, Buffering undoubtedly found career-best form over the 2013 edition of the Spring Racing Carnival; running second to Samaready in the Group 1 Moir Stakes (1200m) first-up before completing an exceptional run of victories in taking out the Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m), Group 1 VRC Sprint Classic (1200m, now Darley Classic) and Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m).

Returning to racing in typically competitive form this year, Buffering ran seventh in the Group 2 Challenge Stakes (1000m) before placing third in each of the Group 1 T.J. Smith Stakes (1200m), Group 1 BTC Cup (1200m) and Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m).

Charging home to take out the Moir Stake first-up this time, Buffering was unlucky to cross the line in seventh position in a fanning finish in the Manikato Stakes on October 24th, in what was his only other start prior to the Darley Classic.
