Gordon Lord Byron Primed for 2014 Hong Kong Sprint

December 4th, 2014

Making himself known to the Australian racing community when charging home to win the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) over autumn, trainer Tom Hogan has revealed Gordon Lord Byron will line up for the Group 1 Hong Kong Sprint (1200m) in career-best form on December 14th.

Progressing to a credible sixth behind he likes of the world’s leading sprinter Lankan Rupee in the Group 1 T.J. Smith Stakes (1200m) on April 12th, Gordon Lord Byron has since returned to his native Britain for second in all of the Group 3 Renaissance Stakes (1207m), Group 1 Sprint Cup (1207m) and Group 1 Qatar Prix De La Foret (1400m) and a strong victory in the Group 2 Champions Sprint Stakes (1207m) at Royal Ascot most recently on October 18th.

Thrilled with the form displayed and work produced by the Byron gelding leading into the 2014 Hong Kong Sprint, Hogan told PAA he believes the barrier draw will mean the difference in success for his sole entrant this year.

“He’s been in great form since his last run at Ascot, and we’ve taken him to Dundalk, where he loves the surface,” Hogan said.

“His work there last Friday evening was first class – absolutely tip-top.

“Gordon Lord Byron is not short of speed. He’s been to Haydock, a fast six-furlong (1200m) track, for the Sprint Cup these past three years, and run well.

“Last year the Hong Kong Sprint was won by Lord Kanaloa by five lengths. That’s like winning a two mile race by a distance and I don’t see a Lord Kanaloa in the field this year.

“All we can hope for is a reasonable draw, and some cover and luck in running. We go there with confidence, and it’s certainly worth a shot.”

Securing a commendable race record of eleven wins and a further eighteen minor places from his 43 competitive appearances across the globe so far, Gordon Lord Byron has travelled to Sha Tin on three previous occasions; running fourth in the two most recent editions of the Group 1 Hong Kong Mile (1600m) and seventh in the Group 1 Champions Mile (1600m) following his Australian tenure this year on May 4th.
